with a focus on non-traditional dance vocabulary, honing and

Naoko Maeshiba (Remains of Shadow)
Friday, Jan 20, 1-4 PM, Towson University Center for the Arts
Butoh is a contemporary avant-garde performance form which
emerged in Japan in the early 1950’s and evolved in the
post-war landscape as reaction against its Westernization.
Early pioneers searched for a new form true to the Japanese
experience and identity, a form that went beyond the boundaries
of disciplines, a form that brought the dancers close to the
body itself and traversed the distance between the body and
the universe. This rigorous physical training focuses on the
imagination and the transformation through body and mind.
