JANUARY 12, 2006
Merrily we roll along. The performances here at QuestFest
are off and running, and there’s a lot to see. Thursday
saw the openings of Mosaic and Pilobolus Too at
Towson University, and Blood Makes Noise & Into
the Night at Baltimore Theatre Project.
After the performances, the QuestFest family celebrated
with a little get together at the Marriott. For many of us,
it was the first opportunity to put faces to e-mail addresses.
Sabrina Hamilton and Mollye and Kelly Maxner discussed dealing
with subtext in sign language, while Jay Herzog shared the
ravishing success of his fifth grade son’s turn as
Tevye, and Paul Harrelson tried not to fall down. Much food,
drink, laughter, and conversation that you could see AND
hear. |

Friday brought the opening of Naoko Maeshiba and Tatsuya Aoyagi’s
Remains of Shadow. The performance tonight was alternately
lovely and challenging. The piece raises a lot of questions
about cultural identity, and how to fuse two disparate halves
of a person. It’s also interesting to note that this
performance raises a lot of questions about methods of communication,
which is at the core of the entire festival. The video landscape
is at times funny, oppressive, sad, and beautiful. Also, you
must come for the ping pong balls! I’m serious!
