Mum Puppettheatre
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
From the Ashes combines world mythology, masked actors and Japanese-style bunraku figures, probing the origins and tangled relationships of man and the gods. Performed without words, with a haunting musical score, From the Ashes has toured around the world since it premiered in 1991, winning the 'Pick of the Fringe' award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and was last seen in Philadelphia in 1995 when it won three Barrymore Awards. Written and directed by Robert Smythe with original music by Adam Wernick.
Mum Puppettheatre creates emotionally compelling theatre, weaving together live actors, masks and puppets in the world-wide and age-old art form of puppetry. Mum’s theatre art connects to audiences with a quality that is magical, often haunting and always unforgettable. Mum was founded in 1985 by current Artistic Director Robert Smythe as a touring company that traveled throughout the world. Mum now has a home season in an 80-seat black box theater in Old City, Philadelphia producing work like no other in the Philadelphia region.
