My Partner is a Puppet-or- playing a scene with an inanimate object
A workshop in how actors can interact with puppets and how a scene changes if some of the characters are actors and some puppets. Puppets change the dramatic levels of a scene.  They embody a separate reality from human actors.  When they come together in one scene, they open exciting doors to comedy and to the unusual.  Take a dramatic situation: waking from a dream.  It will be a very different scene if a puppet awakens a sleeping actor, or if an actor awakens a sleeping puppet!  This is a chance to play, have fun, and develop a new theatrical tool!

Drew Richardson (director of NANO / aka Drew the Dramatic Fool)

3/4 2:00-5:00PM Master Class
LOCATION: ELSTAD AUDITORIUM
Theatre of the Imperfect
Declaring perfection to be an unattainable myth, this class embraces and celebrates imperfections— in ourselves, objects we encounter, and the space around us. Flaws, habits, traits, problems, failures, and hazards become sources for comedic drama (or serious comedy). The goal is to build solo and group performances that live onstage, in the present moment, instead of in our heads.

Dramatic Foolery
A physically playful approach to theater. Participants will create visual comedy by being brave enough to laugh at and with themselves—without even trying to be funny. From simple movement-based games come creative moments that begin the process of making visual plays.

Risk and Play

3/8 9:00AM-12:00PM Master Class
LOCATION: ELSTAD AUDITORIUM
Through emotional and physical risk, students of Risk and Play explore the four elements of 500 Clown Theater:  Action, Risk, Audience and Humor.  Group and individual exercises are designed to encourage students toward the following goals:

    * Locating and releasing onstage tension
    * Developing an awareness of audience, space and partners
    * Allowing given proposals to awaken impulse
    * Giving proposals to partners from impulse

At the heart of 500 Clown theater-making is the idea that physical action is a language that all audiences speak.  Risk and Play introduces students to their risk threshold and mines it for theatrical value.  We have developed playful ways to work with risk that result in the creation of an active state in which action becomes stage-worthy and in which we can be provoked to action easily.  Participants should dress in clothes that they can move freely in. Clothes should also be free of lettering and logos.  No dangling jewelry.  Bring drinking water in a container that can be sealed, and a notebook if you like to take notes.
