 Journey to the West

Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong

Production PhotoJourney to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. The tale is also often known as Monkey King.

The novel is a fictionalised account of the mythologized legends around the Buddhist monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to India during the Tang dynasty in order to obtain Buddhist religious texts called sutras. The Bodhisattva Guanyin gives this task to the monk and his three protectors in the form of disciples — namely Monkey King, Greedy Pig, Friar Sand — together with a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang's mount, a white horse. These four characters have agreed to help Xuanzang as an atonement for past sins.
Being very skilled in the use of magic, Monkey King is the main character in the story. Xuanzang's safety is constantly threatened by supernatural beings, and the Monkey often acts as a bodyguard. He is known to have incredible strength, being able to travel high speed, knowing 72 transformations, which allowed him to transform into various animals and objects. He also knows various spells such as commanding the wind, conjuring protective circles against demons, or freezing humans, demons, and gods alike with one word.
The group encounters a series of eighty-one tribulations before accomplishing their mission and returning safely to China. Monkey is the hero of the fantasy and the story is as full of imagination as Monkey is of magic, and packed with incident and down-to-earth humor.
In 2010’s version, the Journey to the West will be performed by a group of Hong Kong performers with and without hearing impairment. To showcase the beautiful work of art without language barrier, the characters, with their superb body movements, give a performance that is filled with unique, alternative aesthetics. The group will lead the audience through using their facial expressions, body movements and hand gestures that converge into the exciting journey.
