 Paraffin

Naoko Maeshiba/Kibism
Japan/USA

Production PhotoParaffin is a dance theatre that investigates the subliminal forces of formulas that affect our body and mind. Illuminating our fear and yearning for the hidden, the piece interweaves multiple relationships of love, temptation, and struggle to reveal and discover identity. In the sensual and fiery landscape, body reveals “unspeakables" and “invisibles,” shedding light on the deep and dark places of our souls. Paraffin takes you through an exquisite and hypnotic landscape charged with intense physicality.

noun
1. strange beauty.

KIBISM [kibizm] is a fluid, transdisciplinary performance unit formed by Naoko Maeshiba in 2002 in order to explore the depth of the body, enhance the exchange and connection between different disciplines and cultures, and discover and examine various forms of perception. Examining body's potentials as a place where the external and the internal stimuli encounter, as a vessel through which images germinate, as a landscape for memories and histories, we investigate the relationship between body and the various environments.

With the blend of the old and the new, Kibism works are a synthesis of kinetic, visual, auditory, aural, and sculptural elements, bringing out exquisite darkness combined with vibrant festivity and illuminating the rich layers of abstracted narrative. Known for the primal and refined physicality drawn from both Western and Eastern disciplines, Kibism works delve into the hidden and the obscured aspects of the society, unearth the ephemeral moments in life, and seek out the strange beauty (KIBI) of our existence on the universe. Past productions include: Communitas, The Voyage, Trace, Remains of Shadow, and Absence.

Our collaborative process engages artists from various cultural and disciplinary backgrounds together. Previous collaborators include: Steve Bradley (transmedia artist), Laure Drogoul (installation artist), Mara Neimanis (aerial artist), Kinior and Makaruk (Polish electro-acoustic duo), Mykroknytes (electro-acoustic duo), Sharon Mansur (dancer/choreographer), Audrey Chen (cellist./vocalist), Jason Sloan (sound artist), Monika Lilleike (voicalist), Lori Ohtani (dancer/choreographer) .
